Overview of Biliary Cirrhosis
Biliary Cirrhosis or primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is a genetic, autoimmune disease characterized by progressive inflammation and destruction of the small ducts where bile travels to and from the liver. The progressive damage to these ducts cause gradual bile buildup inside or outside of the liver, which causes irreversible damage to the tissues.
Of the two sites affected, which result to Biliary Cirrhosis, it is extra-hepatic obstruction that may undergo surgical decompression, but intrahepatic obstruction may not.
Clinical features of Biliary Cirrhosis are confirmed by elevated bilirubin levels, ALP, ALT, AST, and manifestation of progressive symptoms of liver failure. Biliary Cirrhosis is commonly asymptomatic, but when symptoms occur it is usually in the end-stage of the disease. Symptoms include generalized fatigue, itchiness, yellowish discoloration of the skin, ascites, liver enlargement and edema.
