Can People Who Have Hashimoto’s Disease Be Approved for Life Insurance?
Yes, most individuals with Hashimoto’s Disease will be able to qualify for traditional life insurance, the type of insurance which requires a medical exam.
However, these types of approvals can only be offered by life insurance companies that are accustomed to high risk life insurance cases.
How Much Will it Cost?
Best Case Scenario – Most cases of Hashimoto’s Disease if detected early and the thyroid hormone levels controlled may get the best rating at “Standard”. It is however, very important to get the proper medical or surgical management to control the symptoms of fluctuating levels of thyroid hormones, neck enlargement, fatigue and many others. If Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is detected early, complications like thyrotoxicosis and thyroid failure may be prevented successfully, most cases may have a “Standard” rating. You may have difficulty qualifying for traditional coverage, but could be eligible for a graded death benefit policy.
Common Questions to Assess Rating Class
If you’re unsure if you will qualify for a Standard rating, please see the questions below:
How many years have you been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Disease?
Hashimoto’s Disease is a non-preventable, but controllable condition. When early detection and management is done, it has a very good prognosis. Most controlled cases, may qualify for a “Standard” rating. Longevity of the condition without proper treatment, however, may result to serious complications to the heart.
Have you experienced any symptoms within the last six months?
Symptoms of chronic weight gain, muscle pains or neck enlargement may be flare signs, which will require further medical evaluation before a health class can be determined.

Are you taking any maintenance medication?
The need for medications such as triiodothyronine, levothyroxine or desiccated thyroid extract for Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is very important for the control of the thyroid function and the thyroid hormones. Irregular intake of medication may cause the need for further evaluation to determine your health class.
Do you have regular check-ups with your endocrinologist?
Regular visit to your endocrinologist is a good sign of control of the condition and may get you a “Standard” rating. It is, however, necessary for laboratory and diagnostic exams to confirm the absence of complications such as serious heart ailments.
Have you had any relevant diagnostic tests in the past 12 months?
A thyroid ultrasound or laboratory test for TSH, T3 and T3 is the best way to assess your actual health condition. This will confirm your compliance with your physician’s management and may earn you a “Standard” rating.
Do you have lifestyle practices that may put a higher risk to your condition?
Poor eating habits such as high iodine intake or maintenance with certain drugs may affect the function of the thyroid glands. These cases will require further medical evaluation before a rating can be given.
If you don’t seem to fit into one of the ratings above, I recommend requesting life insurance quotes from “standard” to “severe standard” so you understand the range of possibilities.

Overview of Hashimoto’s Disease
Hashimoto’s Disease, also known as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune condition that affects the thyroid and the thyroid glands. In this condition, the hormones produced by the thyroid glands are viewed as foreign by the body so it produces antibodies that fight it and destroy the thyroid glands.
The resulting condition is called hypothyroidism where the thyroid glands produce fewer hormones. Because the hormones play an essential role in various systemic processes, the signs and symptoms are also complex. It includes weight gain, chronic fatigue, joint pains, general muscle weakness, behavioral changes such as depression or mania, memory loss, panic, migraine headaches, vision problems, hair loss, constipation, absence of menses, infertility, sensitivity to cold temperature, numbness, various heart conditions and neck (thyroid) enlargement.
Diagnosis for Hashimoto’s Disease is done by detecting abnormal levels of TSH, T3 and T4 in the blood, plus elevated production of anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies’ anti-Tg and anti-TPO.
Complications of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis may come in various forms from mild to severe thyroid dysfunction that may progress to chronic thyroid failure. Transient attacks of thyrotoxicosis may also be seen that may result to complications of the heart’s function. There are cases of Hashimoto’s Disease that may require surgery (removal of the thyroid glands), which usually results in good prognosis.
